KSU Chinese Language Tutor Club Promotes International Exchange
In order to promote international cultural exchange, the Kun Shan University Chinese Language Tutor Club held a fun activity recently. The theme of the activity was Easter. The activity was an Easter egg hunt where both local Taiwanese students and international students together enjoyed this exchange experience together to help understand different cultures. Both individual and team games using Mandarin Chinese to communicate were part of the day’s events.
The KSU Chinese Language Tutor Club members teach international students Mandarin Chinese language as well as do language exchanges with them which is helpful to the international students in adapting to the KSU campus environment as well as raising their interest in Mandarin Chinese language. Easter is a very important holiday to Christians so the club organized this fun Easter egg hunt and also an exciting game of charades with all participants using Mandarin Chinese language.

KSU Department of Food and Beverage Management and Culinary Arts Wins Two Silver and 10 Bronze Award
The Kun Shan University Department of Food and Beverage Management and Culinary Arts team composed of teachers and students went to the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Centre, Bali, Indonesia to participate in the four-day 10th Bali Salon Culinaire 2018 where they performed outstandingly thus earning two silver awards, 10 bronze awards, and four honorable mention awards. Additionally, the KSU team enjoyed meeting other excellent culinary arts professionals during their stay.
The Bali Salon Culinaire is held once every two years and this year is the tenth year. The Bali Salon Culinaire is recognized by the World Association of Chef’s Societies. The 900 participants this year came from ten countries. KSU President Yan-kuin Su encourages students to participate in competitions abroad in order to have new experiences in other countries, become familiar with the opportunities of the New Southbound Policy, learn new international professional culinary arts skills, and broaden their international perspective.

KSU Department of Food and Beverage Management and Culinary Arts Assistant Professor Shih-chun Tai a
The China Youth Corps Tainan City Branch conference is held once each year. The 2018 conference recognized the accomplishments of Kun Shan University Department of Food and Beverage Management and Culinary Arts faculty members Assistant Professor Shih-chun Tai and Lecturer Yung-tseng Ma.
Assistant Professor Shih-chun Tai not only has earned 23 international culinary arts certificates but also has advised students in their participation in international and domestic competitions which helped them win 46 total awards. Additionally, Assistant Professor Shih-chun Tai was a jury member at the 2016 International Taiwan Food and Beverage Challenge.
Lecturer Yung-tseng Ma participated individually in both domestic as well as international culinary competitions winning 20 awards and also advising his students in culinary competitions where those students also won more than 20 awards. Additionally, during the 2016 earthquake in Tainan City, he led his students in volunteering to cook free meals for the victims of that earthquake.

KSU Faculty and Students Document Traditional Cuisine in Longchi
The Longchi District of Tainan City, Taiwan has 12 ladies whose average age is 73 years old and are also volunteers that cook seven delicious traditional cuisine dishes. Recently, the Kun Shan University of Public Relations and Advertising, the KSU Department of Food and Beverage Management and Culinary Arts, and KSU Department of Motion Pictures and Video worked together in order to document this wonderful cuisine and the cooking techniques of the ladies for historical preservation purposes.
Project Director KSU Department of Public Relations and Advertising Associate Professor Pei-fang Tsai said that by using modern digital video technology, sketch books, and also by creating an online recipe book, it is hoped that the traditional cooking techniques of this exquisite, as well as very tasty, cuisine can be preserved forever for all to enjoy.

KSU Team Wins Alumni University Slowpitch Championship Again!
The Republic of China (Taiwan) 10th University Alumni Slowpitch Championship Tournament was recently held and the KSU team won the championship for a second time. A total of 28 teams from all over Taiwan participated in the tournament this year. The KSU Alumni University Slowpitch Team was formed in 1994 and has about 100 team members and last year the KSU team also won the championship. This year Coach Hong-jhen Gao led the KSU team to the tournament and Coach Kuei-ming Chen volunteered his time to help train the KSU team.

KSU Department of Early Childhood Care and Education Visits USA
Over the past seven consecutive years KSU Department of Early Childhood Care and Education students and faculty have visited the United States to observe and participate in practical training. This year also marks the second year that the KSU B.A. Degree Program of Fashion and Performance has cooperated together with the KSU Department of Early Childhood Care and Education in this endeavor which is part of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Ministry of Education Pilot Overseas Internship Program. KSU Department of Early Childhood Care and Education Assistant Professor Da-li Chang led the faculty and students of the Early Childhood Care and Music Teaching Team to the United States for one month to visit various schools and do professional practical teaching in order to give students the opportunity to learn new teaching concepts and well as build confidence in their teaching abilities.
The KSU team visited the Michigan State University Community Music School’s Early Childhood Music Program, the Michigan State University’s Child Development Laboratories, the Saint Louis Andrews Academy, and the Hope Montessori Academy was well as it’s seven branch schools.

KSU Establishes Rende District Parent-Child Center
In order to create an early childhood education space exclusively for children between the ages of 0 to 3 that will include a toy area and learning area as well as be a place where teachers, parents, and children can interact and be supported with educational resources, Kun Shan University organized the Tainan City Rende District Parent-Child Center Project. The Rende District Senior Citizen Activity Center 4th floor was renovated to accommodate the Rende District Parent-Child Center and Tainan City Government officials were present for the grand opening ceremony.
Kun Shan University Department of Early Childhood Care and Education Associate Professor Hua-huan Lee implemented the Rende District Parent-Child Center Project and she said that the center has a total size of 170 ping including an activity area for children between the ages of 0 to 3 and another area for children between the ages of 0 to 1. There is a family study area, a stretching area, fitness facilities, a toy block area, an arts and crafts area, and teaching material. Family members are welcome to bring their children to the center to experience the facilities.

KSU Has the Only Global Taiwan Engineering Research Center Among Private Universities of Technology
The second part of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Ministry of Education Higher Education Spout Project grant is the Global Taiwan grant. Kun Shan University’s Green Energy Technology Research Center has received a very large Global Taiwan grant and is not just the only university of technology to receive this grant in the Tainan City area, but also only one of two private universities of technology in Taiwan to receive this grant as well as receiving the highest amount. Furthermore, of the 23 engineering research centers in Taiwan that received the grant, KSU is the only private university and KSU is also the number one private university in Taiwan in regards to receiving the highest total grant benefits per student.
The Republic of China (Taiwan) Ministry of Education Higher Education Sprout Project has dedicated NT$ 1,300,000,000 (US$44,538,000) in grant funding in order to assist universities establishing research centers. There are 156 universities in Taiwan but only 18 public universities and six private universities received grant funding to establish Global Taiwan research centers.

KSU Holds National Teaching Innovation Demonstration Conference
Kun Shan University has received recognition from the Republic of China (Taiwan) Ministry of Education as an exemplary teaching innovation demonstration university which promotes teaching innovation and the strengthening of teaching quality. KSU recently held National Teaching Innovation Demonstration Conference where teachers from Taiwan and foreign countries were invited to give talks to share their teaching experiences as well as give actual teaching demonstrations. At the same conference a very festive ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for the official opening of a new KSU classroom called the Smart Interactive PBL (problem-based learning) Classroom where 300 faculty members from other universities as well as KSU were in attendance.

2017 Academic Year KSU Kindergarten Immersion Indigenous Languages Teacher Training Project Begins
Kun Shan University recently held the opening ceremony for the 2017 Academic Year KSU Kindergarten Immersion Indigenous Languages Teacher Training Project. 17 newly-hired indigenous language teachers will train for five months learning how to teach indigenous languages to children. After they receive their certificates upon graduation in August, they will then officially begin teaching in kindergartens.
The Republic of China (Taiwan) Council of Indigenous Peoples promotes the Kindergarten Immersion Indigenous Languages Teaching Project so that teachers of indigenous languages can be developed, recruited, and employed on the staff of kindergartens. An indigenous language will be the main language of instruction and the children will be immersed completely in an indigenous language environment so they can learn in a natural way their own indigenous language as well as build a solid foundation in that language.
