Department of Visual Communication Design

Core Courses

All the courses of the four-year and two-year college of technology and graduate school have been offered in response to the trend in the society and needs of the industries. With the changing of our social framework, the Department offers courses which prepare students for both further studies and future careers. An emphasis on basic training is placed to reinforce students creativity and ability to innovate their design. Besides, students are expected to form a global perspective as a result of foreign visiting professors lecturing at the Department.

Curriculum planning is in accordance with the courses of two major programsXPress Media Design Program and Multi-Media Design Program. Moreover, the Department adheres to its principle that responds to the trend in the new era and designs courses to elevate students design ability with application of technologies, cultivation their aesthetic sense, inspire individual creativity, shape their ability to integrate design and planning so as to foster professional talents with an artistic and global viewpoint on visual communication design.

  • 4-year Program's Courses of Instruction
    • Design Originality

      This class is about opening students' mind therefore , is designed to show many ways in creative process can be applied to produce a work of art and design. Projects are self-assigned and students may work in any media. Classroom activity consists of consideration about it . The focus is on consciousness and rethinking. Students learn how to get an idea, how to develop on idea and how to push the idea to make their work better.

    • Thoughts in Modern Arts

      The course is to discuss the different theories and ideas of modern art styles. The content introduces through the binging of the contemporary art to the most update development of modern art, to help the students understand the reasoning and develop processes of the history. The time periods of the modern art will be studied includes the binging of twentieth century to now, and the art style and expression in different regions today. It will be mainly focuses on western art.

    • Sociology??

      To understand the theories and definition of Sociology, it includes the individualization, socialization, characterization, family policy, social issues, social discrimination and etc., to in-depth the understanding of the Varity of social phenomenal.

    • Psychology

      Coverts aspects of psychology especially relevant to visual art practice. Lectures and seminars are conducted on relevant examples and case studies to develops insights into the fundamentals of human perception, non-verbal communication . Discussing human visual art and design behavior in different environments such as workplaces and domestic situation.

    • Aesthetics

      Aesthetics is a course cored by appreciative experience to study the beauty and the arts. This course is the methodology of the analysis of the Knowledge, the field and the purpose of art conception. In addition, the course also includes the post modem aesthetic, the development the Chinese aesthetic, the oriental arts and the theory of the movie aesthetic, etc.

    • Creative Marketing and Management

      Studies on marketing related theories, through the studies on the market, consumer, product, price, distributing channel, promotion and brand, it will helps the student to reinforce the understanding and knowledge of marketing management, such as dividing and analyzing the market, consumer behavior and relationship management, branding property management.

    • Basic Drawing

      This exploration of the expressive possibilities of image making, spatial relationships, pattern, and surface rendering expands upon fundamentals learned in drawing.

    • Western Art History

      Know the origins of western art thinking in each stage from schools, media materials, and techniques to analyze what the facts, meanings, and influences of the artists' works are at that time.

    • Form & Material of 2-D Design

      Acquaints the beginning designer with the basic principles of terminology, guidelines, methods and systems used to solve design problems. Understanding and evaluating information, learning the value of research and creating accurately communicative zymology for idea driven design solution.

    • Introduction of Visual Communication Design

      Establish students' study foundation of stepping into practical design through the formation and the commentary of vision, communication, media, symbols, and relevant theories.

    • Color Planning

      Introduces the students of an organized way of thinking about and using color. Recent color theories and systems applicable to visual arts. Assignment give practical experience in working with color and provide opportunities to explore its expressive effects.

    • Advance Drawing

      Develops perceptual skill as foundation for drawing. Students work in charcoal, pen and ink, and explore other media for individual expression. Creating awareness through that a final product is the result of organization of visual elements: line, form, value, space, shape, pattern and texture.

    • Form & Material of 3-D Design

      The elements of design and their structural relationship as applied to problems in three dimension. Students also learn to use different appropriate materials, tools, and techniques needed to show effective idea development and presentation methods required at the various stages and levels of design problem solving.

    • Typography Layout Design

      Although the letter is a abstract sign, but it is give the both function of transmit and motion of mind which could let student control the sense of letter. Cultivate students to have ability and become profession designer. The contents included :Typeface design, Logotype design and Typography.

    • Edition Design

      Emphasis on working with words and pictures, by using both traditional tools and modern computer techniques. The Skills of print-making, advanced electronic pre-press, and practical page-making applications are the result.

    • Introduction Easter Arts

      The content of the course is focused on the Eastern art. Chinese art will be the core subject area for the course. First of all, there will be introduction on the art expression through out different dynasties by the time order, and also the social background of the development. Then there will be the analyzing of the south-east Asia culture, which influence and the stimulation on the Chinese art in the past. For the modern history, we will discuss the new development of the Chinese art after the Western art has brought into the art scene in the East.

    • Visual Communication Design

      Introduction to the basic visual vocabulary. Development of visual awareness, analytical thinking and application of design principles. Understanding and evaluating information, learning the value of research, and creating accurately visual communicative zymology for idea-driven design solutions.

    • Illustration

      The style of the illustration and application practices.

    • Design History

      This course cover the significant technical and social developments that have affected the visible aspects of communication. Emphasis will be placed on mechanical printing, variable typography. Survey of historical trends in the development of pre-historic age to modern design reflecting both the real and conceptual influences of society.

    • Information Visualization Design

      The goal of this curriculum is to train student's abilities on visual design, image semiotics and cross media, strengthens the student's design capacity and the design conformity raise regarding the information transformation. The main content of the course is navigation map design as well as the music (hearing) visualization design.

    • Visual culture and criticism

      ?Visual culture and the commentary, to discuss different culture aspect and facts, understand the interlink relationship between visual images, semiotic and language, through the theories of art creation and practical experience, to accumulate the pattern of process. Follow the visual image dialectical, thought, compare data and understanding, to gain the benefit imagining element and creative ability for research.

    • Copyright

      Copyright is set up due to the currency of international market. The knowledge of copyright assists to educate people how to protect their own rights as well as respect the others intellectual property rights. Furthermore, copyright is the fundamental protection of cultural development. Accordingly, the course of Copyright is held.

    • Projects Design I, II

      In independent or group project which is designed by the student, with the approval of a supervising faculty member. Advanced projects and portfolio evaluation for students planning a career in graphic design, computer graphic design, computer animation or advertising design. Exploration of presentation techniques to create finished comps.

    • Professional collection

      The main focus of the course lies on the editing and design student's own portfolio, which will be useful in the presentation for pursuing advance studies or career in the future. The content of the course including portfolio design and editing, design style set up, proposal for the design, discussion, experiment printing, preparation for graduate exam, preparation and information of career.

  • Graduate Study's Courses of Instruction
    • Visual Theories and Criticism

      Since the 19th century, visual perception has been the major method for people to realize material world, experience reality, and establish sense of value and faith. Upon the evolution of technology, the media carrying visual symbols has changed from cave totem, painting, photograph, to dynamic movie, television, video, computer multimedia and virtual interactive network driven by modern digital technology. These huge changes impact people's cognition experiences over and over again, and overthrow the principle of encoding, decoding signals. This course takes time to review the classical researches of vision formation and media type in modern sociology, economics, esthetics of art, anthropology, and cultural studies to think over and debate aesthetics of every type of visual media, rule of message communication, reality/virtual reality/hyper-reality where message communication involves, molding of collective consciousness, formation of culture experience, etc.

    • Research Methods

      Guides students to realize the significance, process, and method of social science research to set up the foundation for writing their research papers. The course contents focus on quantification-oriented and qualification-oriented method that commonly used in social science research. By studying different research methods, students will realize the essence of research process, differences, advantages and defects of different research methods, and develop the ability to read out and analyze every type of research reports. Besides, the more important for students is that participating in every research step of academic papers, such as setting up research theme, reviewing literature, building up research structure, collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data. By the end of semester, students shall finish a formal report in the format of academic paper, and present their research results.
