Department of Information Management
Characteristics
In order to ensure education quality, the department stays focusing on the correct objectives and directions. The courses of MIS department are designed and adjusted to meet the needs in industry, not only for students to obtain the fundamental MIS knowledge but to motivate students』 learning desire.
- Education Objectives
The goals of our department are to graduate students who:
- have mastered MIS professional skills for meeting the needs in industry.
- are capable of developing and managing the information systems.
- are capable of assisting the managers to program, analyze, operate, manage, and make proper decisions.
Besides of achieving the above goals, the department accommodates itself to the government policy for developing information technology and expects that the founded Tainan Science Park and success of transition of the traditional small- or medium- sized organizations require a lot of professions in MIS (such specialties as E-Commerce Framework, Agent-Based Framework, Decision Support Systems, Knowledge Management Systems, Digital Development Systems). The department offers various programs for students who plan to continue their advanced studies or serve in industry, as well as strengthens the facilities and faculty. Additionally, the department participates aggressively many of the ongoing plans executed by the Office of Technology Cooperation of Kun Shan University.
- Teaching Characteristics
Based on students' will for either continuing their advanced studies or getting employed in business or industry organizations, the department encourages students to obtain the MIS-related professional licenses and to be ready for functioning in a broad range of organizations after graduation. The department not only trains students to develop information systems and make decisions professionally, but also strengthens students』 knowledge and skills related to networks and communication. Moreover, the 「real-case」 training of the senior projects help students capable of integrating various professions systematically and applying the concepts of information systems to the real cases.
- Future Directions
- The department will integrate the undergraduate and graduate level courses to become a series and complete program for advanced research in Technological and Vocational Education.
- To meet the industrial needs and promote the industry level of Taiwan, the department will provide courses related to information technology, information systems, general management, and decision analysis. In addition, the senior projects provide the students having opportunities of applying their knowledge and theories gained in classes to a real-world case.
- To face the upcoming period of network and communication, students trainings like designing, developing, and managing the networks are required.
- Under the trend of developing 「Business Automation」 promoted by the government, the department is playing an important role, 「Information Flow」. The aim of the department is to graduate who are professional in business and management and are capable of upgrading the productivity and automation of the organizations, and furthermore helping the organizations to take their competition edge.
- Through cooperating with some organizations in industry, the department will train the students and reinforce their capability of organizing, analyzing, and making proper decisions for solving the real-world problems. A number of opportunities for student internship in summer or winter vacations are offered by these organizations. The department will also invite MIS related researchers or specialists for speech very frequently.
Research Areas:
The Department of Information Management offered the Master program in 2003. Future research of the department emphasizes primarily on developing 「Intelligent Network Database System」 covering the following three topics:
- Development of Various Evaluation Module (Initially focusing on multimedia applications).
- Development of Network Database (Initially focusing on database related to multimedia).
- Development and Research on Artificial Intelligent Mechanism (Focusing on applications of neural network and fuzzy theory).
To meet the future development of the department and collage, the 「Business Automation Laboratory」 has been upgraded to the 「E-Commerce Laboratory」. In addition, 「Network Multimedia Laboratory」, 「Database System Laboratory」, 「Multimedia Network Instructional Laboratory」, and 「Intelligent System Laboratory」 have been developed in order to meet the teaching and research needs.
Faculty:
To meet the requirements of MIS curriculum, the department has hired faculty members who not only earned a MIS related Ph.D. but are well experienced and knowledgeable in computer and management. The department currently has 20 full-time faculty members (18 hold Ph.D. degree and 2 are pursuing Ph.D.). The faculty members have professions in areas such as information technology, information systems, and managerial decision making, etc. Besides, some of these faculty members are involved in research projects sponsored by National Science Council, Ministry of Education, and Ministry of Economic Affairs, etc. In the past three years they have published more than 100 research articles in national-wide research conferences or refereed journals.
