The Department of Early Childhood Care and Education

Introduction
Since the transformation on modern household structure, gender roles, and society』s division of labor , the need for childcare has become very important for working class. Therefore, this department aims to train students for their roles of caring children from 0-12 years old as childcare specialists. The department offers a very practical program with health and hygiene, childcare and education, childhood education community service as our curriculum base in order to enhance the quality of childcare service.

Educational Objectives
The department aims to equip students with: 1. Abilities to pursue the best benefits for children with self-awareness and ambition in this profession and devote to the business with enthusiasm. 2. Abilities needed for early childhood care and education, and middle childhood after-school services. 3. Abilities needed for childcare organization management and administration.

Educational Characteristics

  1. To train students to develop their professional knowledge, skills and practical experience in early childhood care, early childhood education as well as administration management of childcare agencies.
  2. To establish simulated kindergarten, provide community health services and promote the awareness and development of young children』s health.
  3. To support pre-school training programs to students who wish to be qualified teachers in kindergartens.

Faculty
We have teachers with PHD degree in Elementary Education, Child Counseling, Child Welfare, Child Health, Family Relationships, and Early and Middle Childhood Education. All of these teachers have field experience in their profession. We seek to provide the students with theoretical and practical training and provide students to become professionalism with independent problem solving ability.

Curricula

  1. Child Care:Eugenics, Physiology for children, and Children Health Assessment.
  2. Child Care and Education Theory and Practice:Introduction to Childcare and Education, Child Care and Special Needs, Child Activity Design, Preschool Drama and Art Education for Young Children, Seminar in Child Care and Education.
  3. Counseling Theory and Techniques:Counseling Theory and Techniques, Child Counseling, Play Therapy.
  4. Daycare Center Administration and Management:Management, Child Welfare Policies and Regulations, Daycare Center Administration and Management.
  5. Extra Curricular Childcare:Preschool and Elementary Curriculum Connection, Teaching English For Young Children, Teaching Computer For Young Children, Introduction to Elementary Education, Extra Curricular Childcare.

Equipment
In our department, there are an Infant and Childcare classroom, an Audio Visual classroom, a Material and Seminar classroom, a Physical Education and Music classroom, a Nutrition and Food classroom, a Parent Education resources classroom and a kindergarten. Equipment includes emergency care teaching aids , physical measurement equipment, sex education teaching aids, musical instruments, exercise equipment, infant and child food cooking instruments, video tapes, TVs, slide projectors, computers, professional books and journals.

Some Possible Paths to Follow after Graduation
Students who graduated from this department are qualified to be a teacher in a preschool. Students who also took necessary credits in kindergarten teaching are qualified to be a teacher in a kindergarten. In addition, they can work as a childcare and education consultant in a social welfare organization, a designer or a salesperson in young childrens』 books and toys outlets, open a day care center, a child after-school class, or a special-skill-learning class. If they want to pursue a further education , graduate schools in related areas such as home economics, child welfare and social work may be considered.

Developmental Direction

  1. To strengthen the kindergarten function and quality to provide students with a good place for practical training, and teachers with a good place for doing research.
  2. To establish student community service organizations to provide services to childcare-related institutions
  3. To establish a parent-education resources center and a professional daycare service center, and to publish a professional journal regularly to promote quality in child care and education services.
