Elective Courses
This course is to make the students be familiar with translation skills by practicing in class. Translation theories, translation history and idioms about western culture are taught. Business information and oral translation ability are also emphasized.
The course demonstrates how to organize the content of a speech, to instill confidence in students, and to use body language when giving a speech. In-class rehearsal opportunities enable the students to make a public speech on any given occasion.
The course emphasizes on training students’ English reading skill in the field of journalism, and improving students’ listening comprehension through listening to ICRT news programs. The focuses of the contents are more on international economy and politics as well as Taiwan’s current news. The materials are versatile including sources world-wide, such as Time、Newsweek、Business week、USA Today, etc.
The course is designed for high-intermediate level of students, especially for those who are preparing to take a career in restaurant, hotel and tourism in the future. The course intends to enhance students’ oral ability and confidence by providing students practical restaurant, hotel and tourism English practice which contains authentic materials and integrated communication skills.
- English for Science and Technology
This course wishes to discuss science and technology issues and how they are expressed in professional journals. Papers from professional journals related to natural sciences will be studied, analyzed, and reviewed. Students are also expected to develop oral presentation skills in natural sciences.
As the course progresses, students are expected to get familiar with terms widely used in the field of finance. In conjunction with readings in current events and professional journals, students will be familiar with major issues in finance via a lot of instructional activities, such as panel discussion, case study, etc.
Japanese phonetic alphabet, basic vocabulary, intonation, and everyday conversation would be phased in to enable the students to conduct simple conversation.
Working in groups or pairs, students are drilled in sentence patterns to begin their Japanese conversation. The course teaches students to use Japanese in various situations: greetings, apologies, formalities, and everyday conversation. Also students have the opportunities to practice on the Japanese grammar.
