Department of Electrical Engineering

Areas of Concentration

  • Department Establishment

Our department was established in 1968 for the junior college, and expanded with the two-year night program in 1980. It was named the department of electrical engineering technology after our school was upgraded to a college in 1997. Two-year day and night programs were developed at that time. The department name was changed to "electrical engineering" in 1998, and the four-year program was added in 1999. The graduate school for studying master degree was established in 2001. We plan to include the Ph.D program in future.

  • Development Goal

Our teaching aim is to train students with professional knowledge and technology, a right attitude towards life and concepts of discipline. High level electrical engineering staff will be born here with the aid of excellent teaching quality. Regarding to the arrangement of professional courses, common trial courses are the main part for junior grade students in order to help them find their interest; special group courses are provided for senior grade students in order to help them become specialists of their own interest. On the basis for emphasizing both theoretical and practical knowledge, electric power system management, electric motor control, programming, digital signal processing, power electronics design, microprocessor application, communication system and semiconductor related courses are provided. Besides acquiring professional knowledge, students also learn to become well-behaved citizens with guidance and counseling from the assigned class teacher.

  • Characteristics

Our training focuses mainly on the integration of electro-mechanical system and information technology. In addition to attending basic professional courses and doing research projects, students learn especially how to apply theory and principle into practical work. A teaching quality assurance system is also developed to ensure that students learn on the right route. Some features are stated as following:

  1. Training on power electronics design
We train students to be the right person for
    a、technical staff position in plants and electrical engineering consultant companies;
b、engineering staff position in electro-mechanical motor control and design.

  2. Programmable logic control and microprocessor control
Students get training on programmable control, sequential control, microprocessor interface control design and how to use computer to shorten the time for designing or troubleshooting control system.

  3. Equal emphasis on power electronics and automatic control
Besides strengthening power electronics capability, students will also learn control courses. Furthermore, with the aid of learning power electronics simulation and practice on electric motor control courses, students will acquire the design capability in control system.

  4. Equal emphasis on theory and practice
With the aid of electro-mechanical control, microprocessor application, optimized control, linear system and digital control courses, students can learn to apply related theories in experimental courses. Therefore, high level electrical engineering staff will be trained to meet the industry demand.

  5. Training on doing special projects
Every student has to do one special project before graduation. The topic of this project can be decided by students themselves or teachers. With the guiding assistance of teachers, students can apply all kinds of skills they learn in doing special projects.

  6. Multimedia material used in teaching
For the learning interest of students, multimedia material is used in all courses.

  7. Vacuum and semiconductor technology
Our department will incorporate with other departments of the engineering faculty to provide a full series of courses in vacuum, semiconductor and nano technology. Seminar with related topics will be also arranged frequently to promote sharing of experiences between the school and industrial companies. This will bring about cooperation and technology transfer among companies, as well as upgrade students' related professional knowledge and research level.

Research Fields

For cooperating with the development of southern science park, and the tendency that product lifetime decrease quickly, new technology has to be developed more often than before. Electric power technology and electro-mechanical system control are our two major research fields. We also include other fields like electronics, MENS and information technology. Under this research filed construction, we have made an integration in system control, power electronics, power management and monitor control technology. Therefore, related products of high density, accuracy, automation and intelligence can be developed and applied in electro-mechanical system integration. Our research group has done or plans to conduct a number of research projects. Some features are stated as following:

  1. Electric power research and management
Improvement for harmonic, power parameters analysis in plant, power management and transfer strategies, diversified power management and recycled energy to produce power

  2. Power electronics
Uninterruptible power supply system, all kinds of switching power supply, electronic ballasts, interface of recycled energy conversion and power quality improvement equipment.

  3. Servomechanism and control technology
High accuracy electro-mechanical control, motor speed control, motor actuated equipment, intelligent fuzzy and neural like control and long distance monitor technology

  4. Communication and information technology
Voice signal processing, image analysis and synthesis technology, computer aided design and wide band network technology applied in saving and monitoring electric power

  5. Semiconductor technology application
Vacuum engineering, digital IC design, nano technology and compound semiconductor process.
